Rachel Bolstad
Member of Objective One Team

Rachel Bolstad is a researcher at NZCER. After completing a degree in Biological science at Waikato University, Rachel's interest in the relationship between school science education and "education outside the classroom" led her to undertake a Masters degree in science education at the Centre for Science and Technology Education Research (Waikato University) in 2000. From January to December 2001, Rachel worked as a research assistant at the University of Waikato, where she was a co-writer of a literature review in science education for the Ministry of Education.

Employed at NZCER since January 2002, Rachel's current research interests include science education, ICT in schools, environmental education, and young peoples' experiences of "connectedness" with school. Rachel favours the use of collaborative/ participatory research methodologies and values the inclusion of teacher and students input into the design and conduct of evaluation research. She also has experience in collaborative research projects with other research institutions (e.g. Environmental education in New Zealand schools: research into current practice and future possibilities, and Digital Horizons: evaluation of laptops for secondary teachers, two Ministry of Education-funded projects carried out in collaboration with researchers at the University of Waikato).
